In June 2017, IWC CEO Chris Grainger-Herr posted on instagram wearing a one-off 5002 in matte titanium (one of the posts was whilst on a Safari in South Africa). The watch garnered significant instant interest and in a light-hearted challenge to followers to prove enough demand for a limited production run, collectors led by IWC Collectors Forum Editor (and Moderator Emeritus) Michael Friedberg quickly proved such demand via direct instagram responses to CGH. CGH responded positively to collectors officially announcing in September 2017 that a special edition of 100 would be manufactured for release in Spring 2018.

The watch is visually similar to the 5002 bar the hour & minute hands of the 5004 / 5009, matte titanium case material, and date window (white dates on black background, and white outline). The watch also has a 'fish crown' similar to the original 5002.
